Getting a GSXR and actually riding it?
 

I'm planning on getting a GSXR600 K8-K9 as a second bike after my SV650. I wont commute on it, but I will be putting about 8000 miles a year on it, all year round.

Looking on eBay and Gumtree, 95% of GSXR600's have below 10,000 miles on them. I'm looking at putting 25,000+ miles on mine. Basically what I want to know is, what is the build quality like on a GSXR. I'll be riding in the wet (although I try not to ride in the rain) all through winter, so how would it cope? I'll obviously service it regularly and treat it with ACF50 over winter.

Also, a GSXR with a **** load of miles on it in a market where most have barely any, would I find it impossible to sell on again in a few years time?

A friend of mine has a 05 plate 600 gsxr uses it every day for his commute rain shine and even the snow we have had as he has no other transport but anyway the thing is faultless in the 3 years he has had it the only problem he has had is a puncture I say go for it.

Mechanically you'll not have a problem. Compared to Hondas and yams of the same age cosmetically it won't be as good. I didn't realise how far ahead even the yams were until I had an L0 600 and I built my mates 09 r6 for him. Engine cases aren't painted, paint is thinner everything is generally lower quality and if you ride in all weathers you'll have fuzzy fixings all over. But that's Nothing a bit o acf50 can't prevent. I put 15000 miles
on my k5 600 including a few trackdays in 1 1/2 years and all it had was tyres and oil. Someone off another forum had one going over 80k, any bike with over 30k odd miles will be difficult to shift. My k5 ended up going for 2500 with 29k on the clock.

My K1 750 has probably done 35k miles. It burns oil, but has no service history and hasn't been looked after. It has also been crashed and undoubtedly thashed! Despite this, the engine is still strong and it runs well and everything else mechanical is running well. I'd have no doubts that a K8 could do 50k miles no problem if looked after.

I had a k3 600 after my sv650 and used it every day for commuting for about 18 months. It never missed a beat and in my opinion was a lot better build quality than my SV.

You'll be fine doing those miles on it but you're right to think your resale value might not be the best. As long as you expect that you'll not have any surprises.

K5 750 in the garage with 36K odd on it.

Its not seen a winter, i.e. no salty roads. A few of the fasteners have gone furry, I had some new front brake caliper bolts a while ago as the ones that were in there didnt want to come out, ( bad maitenance on my part more than anything ). Paint has a few stone chips on it. Apart from that it looks pretty tidy.

Hasnt really caused me any greif at all. I had to have a new clutch cable apart from that its just normal wear and tear stuff, i.e. tyres, brake pads and servicing.

As said you'll need to keep on top of the cleaning if you don't want it start to show its miles, some ACF-50 or FS365 would be a suitable investment if you are going to be riding through the winter on it. As would a scotoiler, I've one on mine and it still on the original OEM chain and sprocket.

The mileage you'll put on it will kill any resale value it has though. IMHO.

Iv seen some with a fair few miles on that dont look too shabby. I think theyre mostly used by people for a weekend blast in summer arent they, but can do alot more. As said above though, not as good build as a honda. (Not sure about yams, dont have much experience with them other than a ybr125 rental thing. Hated that buzzy little thing lol)

Resale value... pft... take it round clock and get your moneys worth and it will still be worth something to someone :)

I second this.

All four bikes fallouts one was welded together from appear to have had excellent build quality.
