Random power cut and false speed reading - K4
Hello
So last night I put the key in the ignition, turn it, all lights come up, then suddenly the all lights go off and nothing worked. So I tried several times, nothing happened Then moved the bike while key in ignition, suddenly lights come on for a second and disappear again. I discovered lights would come back on when steering the bike fully left or right. So did that several times, hold in position and start the engine, but as soon as I moved switched off. Alarm went off, but the indicators where not flashing while alarm was going off. Then tried again, steer hard left and switched on the bike, when I revved the engine, the speedo was showing random speeds, like 10, 128, 50 etc... I was not in gear or moving... I went for a test ride, the bike randomly switched itself off and on a few times while moving, and speedo played again few times... I checked the battery, connections seem ok. I bought my bike second hand. 2004/5 model SV650 Been riding it for a week, over 200 miles been fine. I am very new to bikes, just got my licence last week. (0-hero course ;) I noticed when taking out the front and rear seat cover, lots of wires have been taped... And it's the same around the front fork. Last time I used the bike for around 200 miles with no problem. The bike has a hand grip heater (Wired by last owner) and a 12V lighter socket for phone charging. I was using both at the time when riding. Got home and parked the bike in garage, last night got it out and this had happened... any suggestions? Thank you so much people!:smt048 |
Re: Random Power cut and false Speedometer reading
That the problem is intermittent suggests a loose connector or broken wire.
Given it is a total electrical failure there are not many points in the loom that can be the issue. I would start with: 1) The green connector block behind the headstock. You will need to lift the petrol tank, probably remove the airbox and you will see the connector block at the back of the headstock. Disconnect both parts and have a look, if the connection has been bad for a while you sometimes get electrical arcing here and the live wire burns out. Usually at that point it is simpler to bypass the block connector and use a suitable connector for that wire. Do a search on here for "green connector problem" and you should find some threads with pictures. 2) The plug connector on the starter relay. There is a relay for the starter motor by the rider's seat on the right hand side. This is the main connector to the loom from the +'ve battery terminal, if the connectors here get damaged you can see these cut outs. Jambo |

Thank you
I will try what you said! Have no idea what they are, but will google them :) I also need to get some tools... As I said, I am a total newbie! It seems the previous owner has done lots of rewiring, I will need to find a wiring chart for my SV650... So do I need to put the bike on proper stands to take the tank off? |
Re: Random Power cut and false Speedometer reading
For this if you have the bike's tool kit you'll be fine. No special stands or gadgets :)
