Odd popping sound, Pointy.
Hi guys,
This is a bit of a strange one as i've never encountered anything like it before, the bike at low engine speeds every so often pops, like a misfire, making a popping sound from the engine. Doesn't backfire or anything like the sort, the feeling is a pop from inside the tank/engine area. This has only happened what must be 10 times in 1500miles of riding, strange nonetheless. Has anyone encountered this sort of thing or could it be some 'character' to the bike? The bike is a K9 with 8500miles with a 320mm beowulf can de-baffled. The exhaust I must add sounds amazing, another question, something which my friend advised me more over, is that I need to have my engine re-tuned due to the new exhaust, it is only a slip on so I didn't think it made any difference? |
Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
I have a Scorpion exhaust and my bike backfires/pops when I lift of the throttle or blip it. On occasions even flames. Personally I would say for an exhaust so common as Beowulf you shouldn't need a re-map whereas my Scorpion stubby can, retails at about £350 seems to run like it does. I may be completely wrong here but sadly I don't seem to see a lot of Scorpion exhausts on SVs so can't really compare how mine runs. It certainly is opposite to what you have though.

Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
I've got a de-baffled scorpion on mine, had a huge back fire on mine in the middle of town earlier!
(Yes everyone jumped) It's only started to do it more often recently, but I have just started to use the blip downshifting method rather than just sustaining the revs. |
Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
I too have a Scorpion exhaust and that pops at low revs when warm, I quite like it!

Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
I do love the sound of a good backfire with the low grungy sound of the SV. This beowulf can doesn't really backfire, more burbles on the overrun, with the odd bang when cold.
So remapping is a no then with a slip on? I couldn't imagine seeing any real power gains from it. The pop from the engine question still persists, it has only happened perhaps 10 times in 1500 miles, it just feels and sounds strange. It's quiet, in comparison with the bike, it's a definite pop, not a bang like a backfire. |
Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
It's just unburnt fuel igniting on the over run, nothing to be too concerned about.
If need be just get the fuel/air mix checked, but gentle popping when slowing down is normal |
Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
de baffled scorpion here also and i like the sound it makes, my dad hates it but he is into his 50's lol

Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
Hey, I'm in my 50's and I agree with your Dad :D
I had a de baffled Scorpion, it was just a bit too loud, I prefer my nice Fuel end can now :smt111 |
Re: Odd popping sound, Pointy.
I have just this minute debaffled my Scorpion, loud and poppy!! Not being a million miles from 50 it may not stay that way for long!
