Top yoke removal?
 

Hi Peeps

Just a quick question regarding removing my top yoke, I want to send it of to be polished.

I've read a few different topics on this regarding supporting the front end whilst I take the yoke off, can anyone tell me if I need to or not, personally I can see why you would need to but then I'm no pro at it so your help & advice would be much appreciated on this.

No you don't need to, only if you were removing the bottom yoke and forks. The front wheel will support the bike

Correct. Although from my experience you will need to take the weight off the front when you come to put the top yoke back on. E.g by jacking the bike up under the engine block.

I polished mine by hand and also smoothed down the casting marks, the result was amazing until I went riding in bright sunshine and got dazzled! Well worth doing though and it took me about two days and then finished on a polishing mop. If you put in the effort the results are well worth it. :D

I needed a special Allen key to remove lock barrel.

From what I can see its just a security torx bit isn't it?

Yes, it's a T40 security bit.

Having heard the many stories on here about how rubbish Suzuki bolts are, I replaced mine with Stainless steel high quality units. It was worth it for the peace of mind.

Also when I took off the top yoke, I used to a rubber mallet to tap it free from the stem and fork tubes, but found that it slid back on easily. Again a non marking rubber mallet was in reserve incase I needed it.

I can second rubber mallets. Useful for removing stubborn engine cases too.
