Valve clearance advice/help
 

I'm going to do this job myself within the next 2 weeks on my sv650s k7.

But I'm wondering is there such a thing called a valve clearance kit?
Which include shims / feeler gauge / gasket etc


I just want to purchase all the parts/tools and the Haynes manual on ebay now. I would like some help regarding parts names etc. I need to be prepared as I can't leave my bike in bits due to missing tools/parts, as I still live in my mums flat [don't worry I'm 19, I still have a couple years before I need to escape].

The parts you will need to check the shims are basic sockets, screwdrivers & allen keys to get as far as the cams. You will then need feeler gauges to check clearances suitable to measure in the range of 0.1 - 0.3mm.

If the clearances are wrong you will need a micrometer to measure the old shims and a torque wrench suitable for around 10Nm to put the cams back in. You can buy shim sets but they are expensive, and really only worth it if you do this a lot. Your best bet is to find a local garage that will sell or exchange shims with you and pop along by bus or car when you know what you need.

if its a twin spark (4 spark plugs) you will need an OBD tool to set the throttle bodies up afterwords.

for the price and the amount that a DIY'r can go wrong i would and do put the bike into my local suzuki dealer and i'm very competent with spanners. the suzuki dealer has all the correct tools and a stock of shims they do the job day in and day out. they do an exchange so you dont pay for shims.

You don't have to set the TB's up if you're just checking them though Bib's?

Agreed, if they need adjustment, probs best to find a local dealer and see if they can do you a deal on the shim swap and TB balancing. Suzuki sometimes do offers on TB balancing etc, so it's worth asking.

i have done a few recently including my own that have had a valve check and they have been out. might have been out before the check but hey ho. theoretically it should not need done but...
