Curvy engine noise - knocking?
Hi, I have recently purchased a 2001 SV650s. I have a light knocking under load which I believe to be big ends. It happens hot and cold, maybe slighly louder when cold. It's a light knock which is most noticeable when pulling away but also does it when revved from idle. However, I have been watching lots of video's on youtube listening to "normal" SV sounds and I've heard a couple making the same noise. Is this a normal V twin sound or should I be looking for a new motor?
Thanks |
Re: Another newbie engine noise question
With the information above, it's a little difficult to say.
Your best bet is to compare it to a motor that's known good. Where are you located? How long have you had it, and how is the oil level looking? If someone has sold you a bike with a knocking motor recently I'd be looking to pick this up with them if it was described as being in good condition. Jambo |
Re: Another newbie engine noise question
i would start by balancing the carbs.

Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
The oil level was just above the low mark, I can't be sure if it was making the noise when I picked it up, I only noticed a couple of days later. I'll try balancing and see if it helps.
I'm in warrington if anyone nearby fancies a look? |
Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
It sounds like this bike does at the beginning when he's pulling away 0:06 seconds onwards.

Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
Mine does that when cold, but only if I ride away straight after starting
I'm in Runcorn if you want some help? Even if its just to confirm its a "bad" noise |
Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
Right. I've just taken it for a ride and it's definitely better when hot. Still there but nowhere near as loud. Maybe just piston slap then?
I might take you up on the offer corny. When are you free? |
Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
I'm free now matey, generally after 5:30 I'm free

Re: Curvy engine noise - knocking?
I know this is an old thread but thought I maybe able to help out and stop fellow SV riders being driven mad by this as I was!.
For 6 months I chased this very problem on my 02 SV it turned out it was caused by the idle circuit running lean which was causing knock. To rectify the problem make sure the carbs are clean and in good working order with no air intake leaks present next adjust the idle screws until it stops knocking, I ended up on 3 turns out but this may differ slightly depending on your bike. Hope this helps someone. nutzboutbikes |
