Loose brake disc bobbins. Pointy.

Evening all,

I've a 2012 pointy with standard discs. The bike has only done 14k miles.

However, both front discs, but specfically the left, have very loose bobbins. I don't remember them every moving this much and i'm concerened.

I understand you can get them replaced rather than replacing the whole disc - does anyone have any ideas that would help please?

Thanks
Dan

Re: Front Brake Disc Bobbins/Rivets

Firstly whether or not they need replacing depends on how and by how much they move.

I did spend some time looking for replacement bobbins for my oem discs (they had considerably more mileage on them than yours) but without success. Quite possibly someone out there does sell/fit replacements but I don't know who. In the end I replaced the discs with these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1812154490...84.m1423.l2649 It probably wasn't a lot more expensive than replacing the bobbins.

You can read the whole disc replacement thread here http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.p...=chinese+discs

Hi again all, i've had a look at them tonight and it seems like ALL the thinner of the two washers have broken off on the left disc.

The ones on the right disc are still there, but they don't look 'great' - I've attached 2 pictures - you'll see the difference with the first two to the last one.

Reckon these are knackered or can I get some circlips in behind them to secure them again??

Difficult to tell from the pictures but the discs look a bit scored and I'd say that there is every chance that the carrier area behind the bobbins is worn too.

Personally I wouldn't sod about with them, I'd just put some more discs on, either a pair of decent second hand ones or new.

Black Shadow did disc repair kits.
Might still be available.

if in doubt change them,if there was no damage other then just being loose then i wouldnt worry to much, the original discs should under normal riding conditions last atleast 60k if not more,so i would look in to what is causing the premature wear on the bobbins,as to replacement discs, well thats up to you and the depth of your pocket, personally i would steer away from the cheap chinese stuff and stick with the suzuki ones, also check with your local suzuki dealer and see if you can claim on a set of faulty discs that have worn outprematurely, if there is no obvious reason why the bobbins have worn, and as far as i am aware there is no economic way of changing the bobbins, some after market discs have circlips holding the bobbins together and they can be repaired

Calipers sticking etc,are generally the source of unusual disc wear.

God almighty, not this again!! I have them on my bike. They have performed faultlessly for the last 6000 miles since I fitted them back in March this year. Nothing has worn out/broken/ exploded/dropped off. The quality of materials and manufacture is good. I am telling you this from direct personal experience. You can see pictures of them at 5000 miles here http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.p...e+discs&page=4

I phoned Black Shadow at the start of the year to enquire about bobbin kits and they do only one size of bobbin, which unfortunately is the wrong size for the SV650 discs, at least for the curvy. So unless the curvy bobbins are a different size to the pointy ones that is not an option I'm afraid.

Thanks Guys really appreciate the feedback.

I've spoken to PH motorcycles in Crawley and i'm trying to get a warranty repair done from this. I should imagine the discs should last longer than 14k miles, especially as it's a bike solely for commuting.

The spring washers are the fault, the bobbins look fine. They need to make them out of something a little stronger than wafer thinn, rustable crap!

Failing a warranty claim i'll be ordering new discs, likely the Chinese ones as you say they have decent reviews based upon experience.

Have a check what the cost of the OE discs is before ordering aftermarket. I was pleasantly surprised by the cost of curvy OE discs meaning they were cheaper than a lot of branded aftermarket items, with only the Chinese ebay specials being cheaper. Gary's had good experiences on that front of course, which is great, but the smaller the price gap, the less appealing it is.
