Aftermarket ABS for SV650?
 

hi guys!

without giving too many details, I have a simple question. next to a yes or a no, I would appreciate comments.

say there was a way to install ABS on a motorcycle (pretty much every model that uses brake disks), would you be interested?

think of a classical ABS, cheaper than an OEM one (less than half the price), very easy to install (easier than replacing brake pads), lightweight (under 500 grams) and available even for older bikes.

Main issue with this is something you'd have to declare to your insurance. Also, despite it being safer, it might actually push your insurance up under the "modifications" catch all.

Your problem is fitting the pump to the braking system, and then the ECU to work with the SV. Also the sensor needs to be fitted and depending on the design you use this will require the relevent 'noches' on the disc to detect the wheel speed. The bandit has a system that maybe you could use, or maybe steal it of the Gladius, don't think it will be cheap.

leave the thinking to me ;). current ABS systems are this complicated because manufacturers want them to be. there's no logical or technical reason why you shouldn't be able to install one on bikes that were "not designed" for ABS. actually, the whole system can run on its own, without any need to connect it to the ECU.

tip: looking at your brakes the way they are now, which part is connected to the electrical loom? exactly...

True, but its whether you can get the parts to work with each other. If the controlling system is controlled by the Gladius ECU, then your need to see if that will work with your current system. So that will require testing and time, if you're the first then good on you. It will make it easier for those that follow.

there is also mechanical ABS which works by pressure of the fluid. as far as i'm aware its as simple as swapping a banjo bolt for a pressure valve.

ABS is not the be all and end all and good braking techniques are a much more useful, if your the ham fisted kind that only looks 5ft in front of you all the time then yes ABS is great.

@grinch: please stop thinking in terms of taking an ABS system from another bike and trying to fit it on the sv and other bikes. think more of an ABS system made from scratch, with it's own electronic circuit. except for the cable to the battery, for power, the system will not have anything to do with the current wire loom.

@bibio: I definitely agree that defensive riding and good braking skills help a lot and can save your butt, but no matter how skilled you are, braking on difficult surfaces (uneven roads, gravel etc) will still be impossible. let alone in a true emergency situation, where you panic and just squeeze the lever.

regarding the "alternative", that banjo is not true ABS. there's a good article about it...
