Bluetooth headsets
 

I've a question about bluetooth headsets.

I have a GPS on my bike.
My GPS can get traffic data via my phone (presumably via bluetooth connection).
I go riding with a friend who also has a bluetooth headset so I'd like to be able to speak to him

I'm not sure how this will all work. I think bluetooth is single point to single point, so headset connects to GPS which means I hear directions from GPS.
This means that I can't communicate with other friends with bluetooth headsets, and the GPS can't connect to the phone to get traffic data?

Is that right?

I've got a Sena SMH5, a TomTom Rider 400 and a Samsung Galaxy S4. Via Bluetooth I can connect my phone to the TomTom for traffic updates and to receive calls, and also receive voice directions at the same time, so that bit definitely works as multipoint. Originally I could only have voice directions or talk to my pillion, but since the firmware update I am 99% sure that the TomTom can just speak over my pillion at the same time- I'll get everything set up and try it out tomorrow evening.

So I can't tell you specifically for the gear you own if it will work but Bluetooth can definitely be multipoint connected.

Depends on the headset, but a lot of the newer branded ones will allow you to connect the satnav and another headset at the same time, When the satnav gives instructions, the chat will be overidden and then come back once the satnav has finished.

Notsinatin: Thanks for the offer of testing that for me; it sounds like it is dependent on the hardware so I'd be interested to know if it works with the Sena. Tho I think they're quite expensive, if it works I'll have to suck that cost up! :-) But don't go to too much trouble.

Tomor: Thanks for the info. I have a Garmin 590 which I think it pretty good but I guess it'll depend on the headset.

Sena SMH10 has multiple bluetooth

Just set mine up this evening, I don't connect it to the satnav though as I find voice directions annoying.

Yep, the SMH10 can be paired to 3 other headsets and mobile phone or GPS and SR10 two way radio adapter (which has an extra audio in jack for a radar detector) or dual channel SM10 adapter - note the "ands" and "ors". The SMH10 also has a stereo audio jack for an MP3 player if tunes aren't coming in from the phone.
Bike specific GPSes (eg Zumo) are usually paired to both the phone and headset. Other GPSes might have some limitations (eg no voice command to the GPS - a limitation of the GPSes BT protocol stack, not the headset) and are paired to the phone which is paired to the headset.

My GF rides and uses the same. Bike to bike range is okay out to about 1km in line of sight, but better to expect half of that.
We use 2m or 70cm (licensed VHF and UHF amateur bands) digital radio (with APRS position tracking) through an SR10 when it gets patchy.
I don't pair my phone or GPS either... both are annoyances. If it is important whoever is calling can try again later...
