gear ratios
hi all, have any of you got a non standard gear ratio on your sv? As standard mine runs a 15t front and 44t rear. I'm considering changing the front to a 14t sprocket, or changing the rear to a 45t. Any advice would be brilliant! I don't mind losing top speed, but don't want the engine to be screaming at 90mph... Any advice would be great! Thanks 😊

Re: gear ratios
Out of interest what are the 0-60 results running standard, more and less teeth, and rpms in 6th at 60, 70....

Re: gear ratios
I've searched 0-60 times for a standard sv and the most common answer is 3.7 seconds.

Re: gear ratios
I thought it was a bit less than that like 3.2?

Re: gear ratios
All your questions can be answered by the gear ratio calculator. Search the topics for the link. You can play around with the ratios and find the correct one for your needs. As you can imagine, this discussion has done the carousel many times.

Re: gear ratios
I ran non-standard ratios because it was what the dealer fitted and they've since gone out of business. Says it all. I didn't really notice until I came to change the sprockets.
It was a 16 front and something like a 42 rear. Gave it really high gearing, which was fine as I was doing mostly motorways at the time. The best site to compare ratios is http://www.gearingcommander.com/ |
Re: gear ratios
thanks for the help guys, its much appreciated! Omg 16/42 is the highest I've heard of! Must've been like starting in second... I don't think the little sv would be reaching 60mph in 3.2 seconds when a busa does it in 2.5... Anyway I spoke to my local bike mechanic and have decided on 15/46. Will be getting it done in the next few weeks and will let you know of the results.

Re: gear ratios
I run 14/49 on my SV Pointy for the vast majority of the time and this gives me a top speed of around 121mph with it on the rev limiter. I have a 15t front sprocket which I put on if the event is particularly fast, remember the advantage of just changing the front by one tooth is you don't need to mess around with the chain.
With regard to 0-60 there really isn't much in it. The way the SV launches and it's initial drive up to about 3rd gear allows it to be as quick as most other bike, it's only beyond 60mph that the relative lack of power really starts to tell. |
Re: gear ratios
Mine did 60 in 1st before I fixed the odd sprockets :smt080

Ooops, sorry made a typo! Should have read 14/44, i.e.: just down one on standard! |
