Fork investigation

I'm pretty sure my forks are running standard set up due to the dive they have but before I go and order springs emulators etc for a refresh can I open one up with the front end off the ground without removing the fork legs. By this I mean just removing preloaded and whipping the top off to slide a spring out.

You can so long as there's no load on the front end. I did this by using my Abba stand & jacking bike up from underneath.

There will still be some spring tension, so watch out. Be careful when re fitting the preload cap into the fork, its a very fine thread, so easy to cross thread & mangle the cap

That's exactly how I intended lifting mine too. Do I need to loosen the top fork clamp to release any clamping force on the top cap thread?

Re: Fork investigation

I've had a look in my forks tonight, it's got progressive springs fitted and quite clean pink coloured oil.
The only thing I couldn't see due to oil was whether there were emulators down there. Then again while writing this I've just thought if I measure the spacers that would tell me if they've been shortened to allow for them. What's the standard length for a pointy fully faired?

Oh and the thread on the preloaded cap is as you said very fine and easy to cross thread

Just thought, emulators go just below the spacer on top of the spring don't they! So I have none

I think it's the opposite end. They sit on top of the damper rod and so are at the bottom of the spring.

Oh, woops well maybe I need to check again. Fork leg out for that then?
