Fork investigation
I'm pretty sure my forks are running standard set up due to the dive they have but before I go and order springs emulators etc for a refresh can I open one up with the front end off the ground without removing the fork legs. By this I mean just removing preloaded and whipping the top off to slide a spring out.

Re: Fork investigation
You can so long as there's no load on the front end. I did this by using my Abba stand & jacking bike up from underneath.
There will still be some spring tension, so watch out. Be careful when re fitting the preload cap into the fork, its a very fine thread, so easy to cross thread & mangle the cap |
Re: Fork investigation
That's exactly how I intended lifting mine too. Do I need to loosen the top fork clamp to release any clamping force on the top cap thread?

Yes

Re: Fork investigation
I've had a look in my forks tonight, it's got progressive springs fitted and quite clean pink coloured oil.
The only thing I couldn't see due to oil was whether there were emulators down there. Then again while writing this I've just thought if I measure the spacers that would tell me if they've been shortened to allow for them. What's the standard length for a pointy fully faired? |
Re: Fork investigation
Oh and the thread on the preloaded cap is as you said very fine and easy to cross thread

Re: Fork investigation
Just thought, emulators go just below the spacer on top of the spring don't they! So I have none

Re: Fork investigation
I think it's the opposite end. They sit on top of the damper rod and so are at the bottom of the spring.

Re: Fork investigation
Oh, woops well maybe I need to check again. Fork leg out for that then?
