Curvy K1 with diode bodge

Finally got my k1 curvy fired up today, been off the road for 12 years now. When removing the battery I found a wire broken off by the plug that goes into the back of the two relays under the seat. I unwrapped some insulating tape and found that it had been soldered to a large diode.

Is this a known modification to fix a specific issue?

Suspecting something to do with charging circuit but haven’t looked closely yet.

Cheers
Pete

Not too much to go on. I doubt very much if it's anything to do with charging. The charging circuit is a 3 phase alternator connected to a regulator/rectifier which feeds the battery - adding a diode isn't going to fix a problem if either unit fails.
The issues that tend to crop up on older bikes seem to centre around interlocks - the clutch switch and the sidestand switch circuits. The turn signal/sidestand relay has a couple of diodes connected to it but I don't know whether they are located within the relay or in the harness. Do your sidestand and clutch interlocks work as they should?

Clutch does, bike hasn’t been in gear since 2007 so not sure about side stand [emoji23]

Will check that today when I’m back in the garage, have exhaust to refit along with radiator and coolant.

Can’t recall the colour of the wire, perhaps that may help ID it, will check that again too.

Thanks

Ok, closer look says it's an orange wire with a green stripe. It goes into the back of what looks like a relay, beside the fuses.

Clutch and sidestand interlocks both working with the wire disconnected.

Could be related to indicators as they dont appear to be working, was just curious what the diode was for as it certainly doesn't look factory.

Stripped the wire back and reconnected it, indicators working again!

In addition, checking the owners manual shows 2 diodes inside the relay, I suspect one of these must've short circuited so the previous owner fitted an external diode.
