Oil in stator

Forgive my daftness, just checking for a friend who topped up the oil on a k5 svn through the top of the alternator/stator side of bike instead of oil filler oops. Will this be detrimental to bike in any way? In other words is it b*ggered or not.

Re: Oil in stator

Unlikely to be catastropically fatal. May need the cover taking off to drain any excess out, though, just to avoid risk of problem from unwanted hydraulic effects. (Very unlikely to be any adverse electrical effects - most industrial transormers are still oil cooled/insulated, with the coils sitting in big tanks of oil.)

Did adding the oil to the wrong side raise the oil level in the sight glass? If so, it's probably fine because the oil added is getting through to the sump. (I don't know if the SV has a common oilway through the engine because I've never needed to take one apart that far. Workshop manual not totally clear. Hopefully someone will be along to help on that.)

If it were me, I'd probably be dropping the oil, whipping the cover off (take care to preserve gasket for re-use) to inspect and clean, re-fit the cover and re-fill the oil through the correct side.

Thanks for reply Ruffy. Yes as far as i know it raised level in sight glass as normal. Just need to know for sure as ive never come across anyone doing this before and im unsure.

it will do no harm as long as the oil level is correct. i cant even think of where someone would put oil in on the stator side. maybe you should do a small day to day checks with them. we dont want them filling the tyres up with concrete now do we.. it would be funny though.

ahh i see now. thats just the inspection hole for the timing so no worries at all as long as the level in the sight glass is ok.

i cant even get my leg over my bike so your safe ;)...... for now :p
