Full or Dipped Headlight
(Running this again with a better subject title)
Does anyone know what the Highway Code/Advanced Motorcyclists Association etc advise regarding using full or dipped headlight for daytime riding? Personally I think full headlight is safest |
AFAIK the advice is generally to use dipped headlight, except in certain conditions (especially bright sunlight from behind) when the recommendation is no headlight.
This was discussed at length on the 'old' forum. As I said there, I only use full beam when there's no-one to dazzle, or when I'm filtering in really heavy (Bank Holiday type) traffic in which drivers are prone to aggravated lane changing. Cheers Warren |

The advice by AIM and highway code are remarkably similar. Dipped headlamp in most conditions, except when bright sun behind - then use no headlight. Apparently a dark silhouette is better than a light in a light.
Driving on full beam dazzling other road users can be an offence (without due care and consideration CD10?) be it by day or by night. I personally find it a pain in the **** when some prat is sat behind me with his full beam blazing in my mirrors. If you flash one of these berks, they think you mean theres a speed trap ahead! :roll: |

Riding round with lights on (or flashing?? Vinyl, the boys in Blue will love you!) is no substitute for being fully aware and making other road users of your presence. Your headlamp is a small part of this.
On the old board there was some discussion of fitting louder horns. I have had mine fitted for a few months and use them often. It cetainly makes the myopic cagers look in your direction! Only near miss since I installed them was a dozy bint making last minute exit off M-Way, came accross the chevrons right under my nose! She certainly know what I thought of her once my louder horns got her attention. :evil: BTW Headlight was on dipped on the M-Way. |
I only use a dipped headlight except at night with no oncoming traffic. What I have done however is to adjust my dipped beam (SV naked) so that it's far higher than the factory setting (which was good at illuminating manhole covers three feet away!). I can now see at night and can be seen more during daylight hours. Yes I get the occasional flash because it's maybe borderline (particularly going over bumps) but I feel that it's justified and not too unreasonable.
Those dual Fiamm horns from Busters http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/horns.htm are going on next week for sure (I heard Rictus' on Friday and they're in a different league to the wet-fart standard Suzuki horn). I'm also going to put on auxilary driving lights - anything to get those metal boxes to notice that I'm there :twisted: . |
Friday night, 2 of the Soho Massive almost blinded me when I looked in my mirror and got a full beam in the face. I couldn't see for a split second. Now that is dangerous.
I dont see the problem with people using full beam at night behind me, so long as I can drop tacks and Oil out behind me! :lol: |
