Well there's a myth exploded!

I have thought for many years that a fast car will always out-perform a fast bike round the twisty stuff - if only 'cos of the extra rubber on the road.

However, on Fifth Gear last night, they raced a Ducati 999 against a Lamborghini (round a track) and the Ducati won!

Who knew? ...

I was very surprised too. The last such 'test' I read about must have been in the late 70's, when Bike pitted a CBX up against an Aston Martin Vantage (I think). Straights - CBX won, wiggly bits, the AM.

A lovely piece of riding

Another piece was to compare 3 fuel-effecient cars.
The Ducati would've had a chance here too !
And it was cheaper than the Toyota Prius on test

As Vicki said - use the money you save on fuel to buy more motorbikes

Does that mean that the roads will soon be full of boy-racers and mid-life-crisis-victims on Ducati 999's.

Collect bits of crashed Ducati and you might manage to get enough parts to build yourself one for free.

It was a real surprise to see the Duke win espescially as it was a really twisty track. hairpins the lot.

Top gear did a similar thing a year or two back with a Porsche (I think) and an R1. The Porsche just pipped it.

Still, you are getting hyper performance for £10k rather than £100k with a bike.

I didn't see the report, however like all experiments (I use this term loosely!) it is possible to alter the input parameters to create a specific outcome. In this case I would suggest that a Lamborgini is not the best car for a twisty road. Yes there powerful with great acceleration, but are also big with a large-ish turning circle. I have been on a number of car trackdays and regularly see people with Lotus Elise's etc. caining Ferari's and similar.

I think that this comparison has so many in-built differences (abilities of the cars/bikes, abilities of the drivers, road conditions, knowledge of the course etc.) that the results are largely irrelevant to the wider world. We should all know that on modern roads in the UK a bike will be fast purely due to the fact that they can filter through traffic - case closed.
