Guess that Noise?

Right, Need help!

Symptoms: Riding along and when i pull the throttle their seems to be a knocking sound which is on and off all the time when i pull the throttle. I checked the chain and it wasnt hot at all so i dont think its a chain tight spot. The rear disc is burning hot but i dont think its that, i think thats due to me braking hard and may have had my foot on it for a while cos my foots to low on the lever (it may need lowering) I dont know what it could be, because at a a stop it doesnt make any noise, with clutch in or neutral. I guess it could still be a chain problem (i.e. tight spot) or could be crakes which i doubt. Anyone else had similar symptoms?

Down hill the bike makes no noise as not using throttle. And above 40 you cant hear the noise. Its only when using the throttle or just cruising slowly, when slowing down their is no noise. The noise sounds like a clunk, not to loud but i can feel it through vibration on the gear lever. Quite metallic.

Any ideas? Ive never really used this forum before as this is my new bike and i dont really know the bike but i know this isnt usual! Well any ideas would be great, im a person that likes to fix things myself, the hard point is diagnosing the problem. I have loadsa tools and used to be member of the GS forum as i had a GS500E. Anyway enough about that any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! :D

could be gear box sprocket if youve done alot of miles - might need to change it, (my hubby says) !

It's the engine- Bloody noisy V-twins...........

it could be a number of things . . .
it could be stones coming from your front wheel - it had me worried for a while.

if it gets louder as the rev's rise - could be your cam chain tentioner.

worth a check - but check your chain adjustors and your backwheel axl to make sure there is no freeplay there , as if the axl isnt tight enough - your rear wheel may move back and forwards under acceleration and braking.

Piston slapping?

I didnt read the whole thing so im probably wrong.

Are you saying the bike only makes the sound when it is moving? Or when the engine is under load.

If it is only when it is moving then I would take it that it is a chassis issue,
but if it is when the engine is under load taht kind of points to the engine and drive train.

I'e probably read it wrongly, if you load the engine from stand still can you hear the same noise?

Just out of intrest what gear are you in when it happens.

If you do something silly like 20 in 4th or 5th then you get a knocking noise....

Thanx for the help guys!

I guess it is one of those phenomenon. Went to work this morning, quiet as a mouse, wierd. I had lubed it last week but thought mmmmm it maybe the chain, ive heard people use wd40 on their chains and i had no oil left but seemed to work. No noise, then i bought a bottle of chain oil after work and the bike hasnt made a noise since.

Cheers for the help though, good response, this forum seems a good bunch of people,

BTW anyone selling anything for the sv i.e. hotgrips, crash mushrooms, etc, give us a post.

cheers :D
