Steering damper

Has anyone fitted a steering damper to their SV? - I wouldn't say the SV is flighty or unstable but I'm thinking of getting one as kind of an insurance policy.

Am I talking out of my 'rs again or if this a worthwhile investment?

Cheers, Steve.

And I'm so excited about going to the NEC I can barely breathe...

Maybe a tuned nekkid would benefit... Or if you've got the rear waaaay high and the front waaaay low (I ran mine with the forks dropped 15mm and the rear on maximum height for about 10 minutes, and it started headshaking at about 6000 revs, never out of control but enough to thoroughly s*** me up.

I ride my 2000 SV650S as fast as I can with a group on quite bumpy backroads, and was sick(nearly literally to death) of tank-slappers at high speed. Fair enough my rear ride height is quite tall and forks are through the triples 10mm, but I decided enough was enough and I wanted a damper. I fitted this one:

and havent had so much as a shimmy since. Second only to suspension setup, I consider this to have been the most worthwhile upgrade I have made to my bike

I reckon if your suspension is stock, or not too far from it, you don't need it.

Well after having too many slappers on my naked with stock suspension (though the front's now been fettled) I still want a steering damper, even if those who know better (and they know who they are ;)) tell me I don't need it.

Glad to see Pridhac's carrying the torch for this as I reckon it will be something I most certainly won't regret doing.

Well if you have the cash, it looks nice. :D But that me.. if I had the cash I'd stick it on just for the look.

Steering Dampers

To me the question as to whether you need a steering dampers is like the question on whether you need to put new tyres on your bike.

If you have to ask the question and can't answer it immediately yourself then it's worth doing. The extra confidence that you will get is more than worth the money you will spend.

Best get shopping then...

...and in the true spirit of modifying an SV, get the bits from a higher-speced bike off of ebay!!!

Obviously an SV-specific fitting / mounting kit would be needed, but could a damper advertised as suitable for another bike be used?

I've seen in some mags that steering dampers are available in different lengths and bores so I'm guessing an SV damper could be the same as another bike's. If true this would increase the ease of the mod as long as one could track down a fitting kit...

Any thoughts?

Would depend on the stroke, ooer!

What you really want is one of these:

Will that also be available for the naked SV, Mike?
