Stainless Bolt kit - Help!
 

Went to the NEC on Sunday and after a few jars bought a high-level carbon scorpion can. :twisted:
Unfortunately they had no stock left so I'm left waiting. :?

Anyway, yesterday I used the day I'd booked off to fit the stainless bolt kit I got from Chewy instead of a new can.

My question is, what's the damage done by overtightening bolts? I only found the torque settings today and am fairly sure I've overdone it. :shock:

Should I loosen them off again?
Also, some of them should, according to the service manual here

have threadlock applied rather than copper grease. Can I just add threadlock as I don't reckon getting copper grease out of a threaded hole can be too easy?!

PS, these are the setting I found for 99-02 models...

Inner & Outer Clutch cover
10 N-m
Apply Threadlock "1342"

Generator cover
10 N-m
Use new gasket washer on bolt 'A' to prevent leakage

Water Pump
4.5 N-m

silly question here.... but you know how you can get a torque wrench.... can you get the same sorta thing as an allen key?? :oops:

Yes - buy a set of hex heads to attach to your torque wrench.
a bit like a male version of a female socket .. :shock:

You can get allen key heads that fit the drive on the torque wrench.

Hmmm, I need another torque wrench, mine's 40 - 200 N-m.

I don't have my haynes manual to hand, but those sound wildly off... 10nm's not very tight at all. But I cpould be wrong.

Anyway, overtorqued bolts, the real danger is damaging the thread, shearing the bolts, or damaging the gasket if there's a gasket involved. So if it turns out those figures are right, the damage is probably already done... But I'd back the bolts off slightly anywya, since if they get stuck- ie corroded or gunked- while extremely tight, they'll be far harder to get back out.

I couldn't find the settings in Haynes, resorted to the service manuals on here. 10 doesn't sound like much I agree! :?

www.screwfix.com have a torque wrench for a tenner...
