About the GPS things....

Decided must get one for touring, work (I'm crap navigating through towns), and general lesiure activities. Have looked at 3, al Garmin:

GPSMAP 60C/CS
GPSMAP 76C/CS
Quest.

The quest seems to be the best mobile/portable unit, has a large memory and it gives voice commands like a "proper" SatNav unit. But it's £400  But it does come with £100 worth of software.

So, any of you got experience with any of the above I know the Quest is brand new, but experieince of GPS use in general would be handy.

Does the software allow you to plot a route on the PC and then download it onto the GPS unit ? If so, I take it you could put things like hotels in a waypoints....

Grinch,

None of those have enough memory... Won't get a map of Eastern France in any of those. The GPS V is a pretty good tool for a car though, but I don't want to have to take a laptop and have to upload maps, which is why I need the memory...

If you've got the money to spend I believe an Ipaq and a gps addon are the best way to go. I seem to remember Patch has a setup like that.
I have no clue on any of the standalone sets, though, sorry.

I've got an Ipaq 2210 with TomTom GPS antena/software. The Ipaq takes memory cards, so no problem adding maps. Got it under off though, so not sure how much it would cost now.

I have a Palm Tungsten with a TomTom GPS.

Memory isn't a problem as the maps are downloaded onto a secure digidal card. These can be changed as you move from one country to another.

I have not worked out how to fix it to the bike yet.

The thing to remember Steve is to get one that's totally waterproof and can be easily operated with gloves on. I think BMW use a Garmin, it's not exactly cheap but it certainly works.

Waterproofing - one thing I've still not solved yet. Good point.

As for easily operable with gloves on, personaly I've found this to be of lesser importance. I tell it where I want to go before I set off, it tells me how to get there. Dont usualy find the need to operate it though the journey.

Depends how much its gonna cost I guess.

A couple of other sites have referred to using condoms to keep things watertight. Hmmm, good excuse as to why they're in my wallet I guess
