Humming sound from front of bike, wheel bearing?
So, I have a 2002 SV650 bought new 4 months ago (dealer leftover, long story) and it has 3300 miles. There is a humming sound that reminds me of automotive wheel bearing / road noise.
It's not from the engine, as I've gotten it to speed and pulled the clutch (the sound is still there), so I think it may be either a wheel bearing or some sort of tire/road noise. Do you have to repack axle bearings often on a motorcycle? Is this sound normal? That's my current concern, and I appreciate any inputs seeking to set my mind at ease. jason |
The bearings on the SV are enclosed cartridge type maintenance free bearings. I would take it back to the dealer and get them to check it over.

does it get louder the faster you go, could be the wheel bearing I guess.. not sure though.. I had a noise coming from the front of mine a while ago, but it was more like a squeak and the speedo drive was knackered and causing the noise.. just something else to think about
Good luck with getting it sorted |
my grandmother hums alot...have you run her over? :)

A bee stuck in the radiator? :P

Could be tyre or brake noise. Sometimes my disks make a "zizzing" sound when applied- so maybe a caliper is stuck on or they could just be resonating as the pads do slightly rub this disks normally.
You could also have some of those spokie-dokies on the forks that kids fit to their bikes to make them sound real fast- look for meddling kids......... |
Sure you're not just REALLY enjoying yourself? :D :D

Hmmm... let's see, quite a varied response from the informed populace. I may be paranoid, in fact, probably am. It's just a light whining, humming sound, not really obnoxious, just noticeable.
I might take it into the dealer, just for them to have a look, but the dealers in this area are the devil (as opposed to the wonderful dealer experiences found elsewhere). But thank you all for your assistance. Maybe I should just get better at keeping the front wheel off the ground, thus averting said noise altogether... |
