number plate laws

anyone know the laws on displaying one on a bike? apart from you have to have one and the size thing i need to know if you have to have it in the middle at what level that sort of thing.... broke mine today went down a dip in the road felt a bang and opps no number plate and it was a one liner one it hit me hugger and is no more :cry:
