Bikesafe

I attended a BikeSafe day at the Ace café yesterday and I cannot recommend it strongly enough to anyone on the board who hasn’t already done one.

When a work colleague suggested it I must admit that I was a bit sceptical and when you first get out on the road the feeling of riding with police (fully uniformed and on police pans) can be a little intimidating to say the least! However, their emphasis is very much on spotting and anticipating hazards early and reading the road in order to make smooth fast and safe progress 'within the law' and that includes plenty of filtering and overtaking whenever safe to do so (even if a safe overtake means temporarily exceeding the speed limit).

The class based presentations where a lot more informative than I imagined – especially the final ‘Accident Analysis’ session, which included four astutely chosen (and sadly fatal) accidents, every one of which could have been demonstrably avoided using the skill learned.

All in all it really was a very good day, fun, informative, a great PR exercise for the police and the skills imparted are genuinely useful in day to day riding (and could even save your life).

Without a doubt the best £30 I’ve spent on biking.

Whare did you go for your rides as teh A406 does not appeal for the country section!

Mr Toad 21-02-05 06:44 PM

Glad to hear it :D

Doing mine next Sunday along with Mr TinCan

Roo: Dont know the area around there to be honest but they took us up the A41 and then off into some country lanes - good ones too!

Mr Toad: No they don't. Something about it then being classed as 'training' if they did! Instead they observe and then de-brief you on the ride (in an amazing amount of detail) afterwards.

I hope you guys all get as much from it as i did.

I did the bikesafe over at 'The Warren' SE london. It was a real bargain for £30! Very laid back and plenty of input. We split into groups and managed to get 1 plod per 2 bikes, which aint too bad eh? For anyone interested, the're not interested in tiny number plates and noisey cans, but they will give you the once over for safety stuf like tyres and brakes. GOOD FUN do it.....

Thank you for your interest in Bikesafe. I am currently running free assessed
rides for those in your position. The ride takes about 90 mins with a briefing
and debrief at either end. At the end of the ride you will be given an action
plan to improve your riding. These can be done most days except Sunday.
