Hey guys, need some help!
Im gonna be taking my test soon so i need to be thinking about getting a bike..
Im after a commuter and a bike that can cope with some good travel, can cope with my height 6"5 (mostly in the legs) runs well on 33bhp restriction as im only 17, and doesnt kill me on insurance quite as bad as a fazor lol.
so guys, SV650s a good choice for me?

as for 6"5 :shock: - I suggest you find someone near you who has an SV, and try it for size, even if it's only bouncing up and down in a dealers showroom. The faired version, ie. 650S, has lower bars & higher pegs than the naked models. Also there is some variation in seat height across the years.
You don't say where you'll be commuting - if it's around town the naked may be better as it will enable you to see over the top of cars, and you'll have an easier riding position for low speed work
They go OK on 33bhp - there are several people on the forum who have this restriction
Pass your test first, then set about getting an insurance quote sorted (or the other way round if you want :D ) try some of the online insurers to get an idea as to what you're going to get stung for - it depends where you live as much as your age, and also whether it's kept in a garage overnight

Save yourself thousands of pounds... by the time you're 20, you could've bought several SV's with the money you'd have paid in insurance. Do yourself a favour.

I think given the lack of decent choices that make 33bhp stock, the SV wins... If I were buying a 33bhp bike, I'd get a restricted 125 and unrestrict it, but then they don't cope so well with distances :)

The SV is a good choice in terms of the bike, but insurance wise it can't be pleasant. A few people have said that they don't give you a discount for having it restricted.

Bloody Hilarious, though possibly not entirely suitable for those of a very young age/disposition, since there is some swearing.

If you're getting an SV and have only just passed your test, then the naked with crash bungs would probably be a better choice, as you are guaranteed to drop the bike at some point whilst you're still learning the ropes :!:

The bike runs well restricted, better than restricting a 400. Insurance will be interesting, but generally it's cheap - however phone an insurance company or two and find out for yourself before buying the bike.

I think the important thing here is your height. I'm 6"2 and have no problems at all, personally I think it's just right. A very tall friend of mine (possibly 6"6, possibily more) sat on my bike and it was far to small for him. However I have the original shape, the new shape may suit more.

The best thing to do, as Mr Toad says, is get yourself down to a showroom and have a sit on one.
