Shell Optimax
 

Just been having a conversation with a friend about whether there is any point using Optimax in the SV. Obviously I cant try this out yet but I wondered if you guys use it and if the bike "feels" any different?

Had to use it all the time in my Mitsi Evo as it was a Jap import and therefore designed to run on 100RON fuel.

Does an SV have a knock sensor and able to take the higher rating into account? Or is it pointless and I should just stick to any petrol I can get?! lol

The only real advantage is slightly better fuel consumption and it makes a big difference as regards carb icing - so if you have an SV that suffers badly from this (as I do) then it's worth it during the winter.

I will probably still use it if I am near one, the refining process has to be better than it is for supermarket special brew.

Plus I am so used to going to Shell garages that other types are confusing to me...! :oops: :lol:

a common misconception

Optimax and other 'premium' brands are supposed to have additives to keep your engine cleaner, etc. as well as a higher octane rating. In practice you'd have to be pushing it right to the edge to notice any difference

It's all a trick of the marketing department :wink:

I used to use it when it first came out in my Audi 80 Sport, and yes it could easily have been the placebo effect, but I am sure it ran smoother!

I am sure you are right tho, all marketing fluff...!

it all comes out of the same pumps at the collection station, never bother with any fancy fuel, (might have to start now with the ccm :roll: )

A lot of the petrol stations dispatch from the dame depot anyway.

When i was at school we did a trip to an Esso place down near heathrow, BP and shell were filling up there as well. They just add additives to the base petrol

I can't talk about how Optimax affects bikes but I can for cars and IMHO it can make a huge difference. I ran my car for six months on ordinary 95 stuff, finally gave in to people who had been bugging me to try Optimax and it made a huge difference. The engine was smoother, more responsive, improved performance and there was a small improvement in fuel consumption.
