Hope you had a great Easter, and a few good blasts to go with it. Unfortunately I couldn't becuase my beloved 2000 SV650s won't start!!!!

Anyone got any ideas????

The AA have been out twice and have no idea!!!!!! Really don't want to take it in to a garage, but can't fathum the bleeping thing out!!!!

The Engine will fire but won't spring to life. (New plugs and there is a spark)
Have drained half the tank.
Have checked Fuel tap and strainer (all appears fine)
Have checked Fuel line to Fuel pump and the pump itself (all appears fine)
Have checked suction and breather pipes (all appears fine)
Have checked and topped up oil (all fine)

The AA man got it going by spraying some fuel into the air intake. The beauty started, but only lived on what he sprayed in. The bike then died a painful death again......................(lasted no more than 5 mins)
It is almost like the bike is being starved of fuel. But there is plenty in the tank. (It was full, I have just drained a bit so tank is easier to lift off)

Please Please Please, does anyone have any ideas???????

Does it run with the fuel filler cap open? If so then it's a blocked breather pipe.

I don't know anything about carbed SV's, but I had a similar problem on my Harley a while ago. The fuel tap is vacuum operated and the vacuum tube had become unattached, meaning that no fuel was getting into the carb.

Or you could have a blockage in the fuel line, or a blocked jet in the carb.

I did check the vacuum tube for blockage and connection. It was fine.
Also checked the fuel line from the tap to the pump, that was fine too.
I am starting to think Carbs also. But don't really wanna play with them.

When was it last run? If everything is demonstrably working but it won't run unless you squirt an alternative fuel - the AA man's Easy-Start or whatever it was he used - then I'd chuck the fuel away and empty the carbs, it could be that the fuel is contaminated.

First step. Get the tank up and disconnect the two hoses attached to the tank. Suck on the one that doesn't go to the brass box thingy and petrol should begin coming out the other. If so then your problem is with the carbs. If not you have a blocked fuel filter.

Sounds like crappy fuel. How often did you start the bike while it was away for the winter?

Petrol can go "off" relatively quickly if the bike is not run for a while!!!!! Happened on my girlies Thundercat last year! Just fill up the tank from petrol can with fresh fuel and move the bike from side to side to mix and then try to start it! It worked for me! Also easier than disconnecting all those pipes!

PLease tell me when you figure it out I have a 2000 SV650 with the SAME problem! I even bought a new CDI thinking that was it, but the spark is there. After reading your post I sprayed some eather in there and fired long enough to burn that out. Hell I was excited to get that. I don't know how to check the carbs let alone emty the tank. Does anyone outh there know where the fuel filter is located and how to go about changing it? Paul in Texas
