Brake pins

Hi Guys,
I've just tried to change my front brake pads. I can't get the pad securing pins to budge a bit.

Does anyone have any tips on how to free off the pins and get them out?

I've tried grips on the pin and a vast quantity of WD40 to no avail. Please help.

Brakes & WD40 ain't a good idea!!!

I'm going to move this to tuning & tweaking as youi should get more advice there.

WD40 is a water dispersant (hence the name).
You need a good releasing agent - I use one called 'yield' - but I haven't seen it in the shops for a while.
How's the pins in the back brake ?

Changing the pads anyhow, so it doesn't matter if they get drenched in WD40.

Try a penetrating oil such as Pro Gas or similar and soak over night. Then get some mole grips on the pin. Try to grip the section over the hole where the "R" clip goes as this is a weak point. If you try to grip the pin away from the hole, it "WILL" shear at the hole, then you will never get it out. Twist gently. Hopefully it will come out.

Another tip, as I've had my calipers off today to clean. Make sure the caliper can move freely on the pins of the static mounting plate. I found one of my calipers was locked solid. The pad on the piston side was worn considerably more than any of the others on the front, suggesting it had been doing more work. No, it wan't corrosion causing it: it was a hydraulic lock, as there was too much grease in the holes. The pins have flats on them, I guess to prevent it happening, but too much grease will defeat it. Just smear them very lightly with grease.

I'll give the Pro Gas stuff a shot an let you know how I get on.

I have just had to drill out my calliper pin as there was no way on this earth it was coming out. A nerve racking experience it was too.

Once you do get them out may i respectfully point out the pins in the for sale section
try plus gas, which may be upto the job, avoid if possible, drenching the pistons them selves as the fluid may cause the rubber seals to swell up.

Another tip. When you clean your bike, give the pins a quick twist to make sure they are still free. If they feel a little stiff, sort them there and then. You will never get another seized pin. 5 second job.
