Battery life when left standing

Just a quickie, how long do you think you can leave an SV standing for before the battery runs flat. I know it's dependant on battery condition, charges etc etc, i'm just looking for a rough idea.

my old zzr used to kill the battery after about 5 days! never found out why cuz the battery was new.if your leaving your bike for more than a week or two without starting it either disconnect the battery or do what i do connect the bike up to an optimate3 charger when not in use that way it'll never let you down.

(the kwak did have an alarm though??????)

It's a generally considered rule of thumb that a healthy condition, fully charged battery will lose approximately 1% charge per day.

In reality the three months or so that that calculation gives is likely the upper end, but of course if the bike is stored somewhere dry and warm, and is mechanically well and will start easily, then you might just be lucky.

The other thing to condsider is an alarm system of which your bike has one. Different alarms will drain the battery at different rates. I know that my Datatool System 3 will go over to "sleep" mode after about a week on a fully charged battery.

So seeing as your bike has the original battery and isn't fully charged I wouldn't expect more than two weeks before you're unable to start it, unless you're very lucky.

I think an "Optimate" would likely be a good idea in your case.

Thanks guys, i went and had a quick run last night, started no problems. JB, the battery was replaced about 2 years ago so fortunatly it isn't as old as the bike, though i think i'll be investing in an optimate for the winter :)

I've got that alarm but with the pager addon (came as a freeby), wish I hadn't had it installed to be honest (the pager part), if the bike isn't taken out for a good long ride at least once a week (any excuse :) ) then the battery can go flat within 5 days.

Alarm yes, pager addons, get thee away.

If you worried buy an optimate it'll keep your battery conditioned.

One of Lidl's "biking specials" available today is a battery trickle charger for £5. For that sort of price, you can't go wrong (unless it fries your battery). I used an optimate over winter and was very pleased with it.

Optimate definitely. In use or not I put mine on the charger at least once every two weeks. Not only does it make sure you dont get a flat battery but it prevents the battery wearing out.My sv is five years old with the original battery in it.
