Should Brakes be bled/fixed on a service.
Hi ,
Just got my 4000 mile service done and I asked them to look at my front brake , which will only work well on setting 1 now, and I am worried if they continue to get worse , I obviously have no setting 0 to put them on! Well a couple of hundred quid later and all they seem to have done apart from change the oil is mess up my clutch giving me about 5mm biting point  , the brakes are still only working well on setting 1. But I guess the question is , is bleding/sorting out the brakes part of a service or not - I've searched the forums about the front brake but still not really sure whats wrong with them - not sure if I need to change the brake pads or change the fluid etc. - Any help would be great! |
No. Bleeding the brakes is not part of a regular service, just a quick inspection of them.
For your brakes to be like this at 4k is strange indeed and I would go back and ask that they be put right under warranty if they really are that bad. I've done 24k with the original brake fluid (never been topped up and still a good colour) and though they might not be pin sharp they still work very well. . |
Brake fluid should be changed annually, however if the brake performance is not good you should bleed the brakes to clear any air bubbles.

Next time, take your bike to Rob Berrington-Smith in West London -
www.bikesmart.co.uk phone no is actually 020 8567 8585 Rob's just done my slightly overdue 7,500 mile service, and I have to say he was great. The bike was returned as clean as the day I bought it, with everything cleaned & lubed. He replaced the air filter, but didn't charge for it as he had a spare one from another SV he'd just fitted with a K&N. He let me send a cheque in the post the next day so I didn't have to trundle off & find a cashpoint (there's trust for you  ). Best of all, he phoned the next day to check the bike was OK. And he even gave me a lift to/from the nearest tube station. If you think you may have a brake problem/issue, get him to have a look at it, as he knows his stuff, and isn't likely to rip you off. |
