Daft question (again)

I don't have any manuals for my SV but i was looking in my underseat storage bit and noticed a black metal rod that clips into place.

not much of a desciption i know but i'm sure if i say there's a metal rod in the storage bit it will jog someones memory :)

any ideas what it is for?

Take off the seat... and its got a hinge there. Then remove the 2 fixing bolts bellow the front yoke then life the tank up. Hey presto its your Air box.. and the access to remove the engine retard.
