Engine colour question?

Can anyone tell me when the engine colour changed from silver to the darker slate grey and whether there is any mechanical difference betweeen them?

As far as I'm aware, the X (model designation not year) was black, the Y was slate grey and the K1,2,3 were silver. The new K5 is black again.

Erm i think my Y is black? Certainly the clutch and generator casings were black. I could always go outside and look but then that would require effort.

So what years are what model designations?

I'm gussing my 2000 is an X as it has a black engine?

Will normal engine paint do to get it back to it's original colour BTW? The paint on mines starting to flake a little...
