How long do tires take to warm up?
 

When riding in town (30-40 mph) how long do tires take roughly to warm up? 2 miles, 5, 10 etc? I have the standard SV dunlops and a K4 if that makes any difference.

It depends on temperature, whether it's wet or dry and also your riding style. However, typically a couple of miles should see tyres reasonably warm but if you're after their optimum performance then they'll need longer than that with some reasonably aggressive riding to get them hot.

Ah cool. My usual run has about 5 miles of town stuff before upping the ante.

I think I'll let the dunlops wear out before changing them as I'm nowhere near getting the most out of them yet as a rider.

What Jonboy said... though I'm on the same tyres on my K4 now, and they never seem to warm up very well - half an hour of town riding and they still slide on a warm day with 2 fingers on the front brake. They're at 5500 miles now and I'm hoping to get them changed this weekend - probably still another few 1000 miles in them but I'm sick of the sliding under relatively light braking especially in the first 15 mins of riding. It's always controlled and relatively short but I'm not happy with them doing that, and it's worse in the cold and wet, so I'm getting some Diabolo Stradas (same as Metzeler Z6). That's if they're in today...

I was going to go for the Z6s but my tyre dealer couldn't get hold of a front for me so went instead for the Diablos. He was going to put Stradas on but when I told him my commute to work was only 5 miles he suggested Diablos. Even though I am running them in they are so much better than the standard crap.
Has anyone else got Diablos?

Amarko5 used to have Diablos on his SV ('til he swapped it for a TDM :roll:) & that thing would go around corners like it was on rails... Mind you, amarko can ride, I think he'd run rings around me if he was on a pushbbike :roll: :oops:

Diablos are very good in the dry but the Diablo Strada is better in the wet.

Well I went down Wrotham today to scrub my tyres in and after doing 33 miles on the new diablos the heavens opened. It didn't bother me the slightest I still had confidence to lean into corners and my braking has improved. I can't believe how much a tyre can change the feel of the whole bike.
I would say that tyres are the first thing you should change when you get a new bike, wish I did it sooner.
I have done 77 miles on my new tyres, is that enough to scrub them in?

77 miles is plenty.

Under the right conditions I think D220's might actually cool down while riding :shock: Example: it was cold, and at the end of a 40 mile run, there was a 7 mile straight. As I changing down, for a junction, the rear started skipping around :evil: The road was dry and I didn't notice anything, on the road, which may have cause this. It was just cold. :-k
