A Few Quick Q's (Oil change, Crash bungs & Sprocket Chan
Got my SV650's ('99 yellow curvy :notworthy: ) and doing my DAS at the moment, but the SV needs a few little things done before it's MOT. I've tried going through the search but it ain't very good here, throws up too much unrelated stuff :oops:
First up, I got crash bungs off a forum member (see pic) - I thought (judging from others' pics) they went on No.2 position but on inspecting, this looks like 1 large bolt that goes through both sides of the frame so I didn't see how it could be this. Could someone indicate where the bungs should go? Do I even have all the required parts (there's 2 big cylinders but only 1 little)...or are these even for a curvy SV? (just checking! :lol: ). http://www.companychristmascards.co.uk/photos/bungs.jpg http://www.companychristmascards.co..../frameleft.jpg http://www.companychristmascards.co....frameright.jpg Next is the sprocket change - I've got the socket clear to remove the front sprocket but this just turns freely when in neutral. Would putting this in 1st gear be the best way to get it off? Last, I want to change the gear oil. I was wondering where I drain the oil from? Also, I've read on other posts it takes 2300ml - is that as in 2.3L?! I just got a ****y little half litre of Silkolene which won't go very far if it's 2.3L! :lol: Thanks for any help. |

Thx Curium, just got the front off though by putting it in 1st. Having problems getting the rear sprocket off but think I'll just need a bigger wrench for better leverage.
Just the bungs and oil questions then :) |
2300ml = 2.3l, yes.
If you are changing the filter at the same time you might find that you need more oil than that. I'm not sure, though, because the oil capacities is lower on the curvies than the pointies. |

just to be absolutely clear (sorry if it unnecessary), the engine and gearbox use the same oil supply, in other words it's engine oil you need. :idea: Useful info is available in the official manuals here http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals.htm |
Thanks Carsick - yeah, think I read that it's 2.7 if you're changing the filter (but I won't be).
Ah, didn't know that embee! I'm coming up from a 2 stroker, looks like I've made an assumption or two that haven't panned out...these are a different animal all together! Thanks for the link too, very helpful. Oh well, first thing's last then, how do I get these bungs on? 1 & 3? |
I don't think those bungs go on either position you've marked, I think that sort are intended to fit on the engine mount further forward, (the bolt to the right of '4' in the bottom picture).

Even if you`re a tightwad don`t change the oil and not the filter.
That`s like putting fresh oil in a deep fat frier but leaving a dead rat in the bottom. Oil is blood for your engine, your body has filtration organs and your bike needs a clean filter. They`re only £7ish. |
Thanks for the replys :thumbsup:
Sid - gottcha. Makes sense as all the pics I'd seen where they were mounted to #2 were the longer type. Carl - I wasn't being a tightwad, it had it's 18K miles service about 1000 miles ago so I figured it wouldn't need one, but the oil level did look low so I thought I'd top it up, then thought that I may as well replace it seeing as I wanted to be ever so splash with the cash ;) That said, even tho the service wasn't long ago in milage terms, it was over a year ago so maybe I should change the filter too (?). Are the filters specific to the SV (ie. will I need to go to a dealer)? |
