Changing brake pads.
 

Hi all! The new machine is fantastic, my retinas have taken a beating, but now I have very squeaky brakes, and I feel that there should be MUCH more stop from them compared to what I've got, so, changing of the brake pads it is.
How hard is this? Do I need special tools?

front ones you just need appropriate sockets and ideally a torque wrench, rear ones you need two different sockets and on pointies one of the allen keys in your toolkit. Needlenose pliars are also handy.
Careful with the back one, I managed to sheer the back bolt while tightening at less than the required torque. I can only assume it was a crap bolt.

To help with the squeaking, put some copper grease where the pad backing meets the pistons.

A question for those in the know, is it necessary to transfer all of the squeal shims from the OEM pads onto new pads?

Fronts are a doddle but if they're anything like mine you'll need a breakers bar to get the main caliper bolt undone.

Rear is easy enough too, but the little metal clip that holds the pad in place can be an absolute swine to get back on.

I just put carbone lorraines on. Nice feel and very good stopping power.
You don't need special pads for the back, just oem ones are easily good enough.

Put 'em back as you take 'em off, mate :wink: . Have occasionally just used copperslip without the shims....sometimes it works, sometimes they squeal like buggery!

I was told that part of the reason for the squeal shims is to absorb some of the vibration that would otherwise go through the piston and knacker it.
