does tying down the bike damage the shocks
 

i was wondering if tying you bike down to a trailer, pickup or whatever else you can transport a bike on damage the shocks

i have read on the net that compressing the shocks for a long period of time can wreck the seals etc, does this only apply to road bike or do off roaders suffer as well

has anyone got any advice on how to get a crosser from a to b, getting a pickup is not a option either.

what is the best way to tie bikes down as well

Should prevent damage to your fork seals

You could open the fork caps?

Um...you've never had your fork caps off have you? :shock:

Proberly not a good idea, to take them off, put them on etc..

Deffo not a good idea, apart from the fact you'd have to change the oil everytime you transported the bike they are a biatch to re-do.

I changed the oil in them yesterday. No I meant loosen them to relieve the pressure? I wouldn't do it if it was a couple of hours, but a few months maybe?

Shouldn't be a problem on a normal length of journey. If its going to be tied down for over a day though, relieve the straps when you aren't travelling.

You don`t need to batter the tie downs til the springs are compressed by miles and miles.

If you attach your tiedowns for the front as high as poss, fork tubes/clipons/handlebars/grips and connect the other ends as far apart as possible, then you only need light tension to keep the bike upright.

That`s how I transport my race bike. And one more over the rear subframe with the bodywork off.
