Oil usage

Can anyone please advise what is normal oil consumption. I have just got round to removing my lowers so I can check the level properly and had to add about 0.5L It is about 2500 miles since I last changed/topped up.

Is this a normal rate of consumption?

Well it depend on you mileage and how hot the engines been getting as you if you've been riding it hard then may have burt alot more off. I normally top up mine and I'm doing 130 miles a day. Don't be surprised if it changes though as it will, what with weather and riding style...

It does seem that oil usage in the SV engine varies quite considerably and is never too predictable. Do ensure that when checking your oil level the the engine has previously been hot and then allowed to stand for about five minutes to get an accurate reading. Yes you can check it from cold but it can take a while (after being held upright) for the oil to evenly distribute in the crankcase which often leads to thinking there's less oil than there is.

And if you're topping up using the sight window as a guide, do it bit by bit (preferably starting the engine inbetween and allowing to cool slightly) otherwise you'll again get a false rading and most likely overfill. It also seems that a lot of SVs have a better gear change with the oil level only half way between Min and Max.

what everybody said so far, it's quite variable

my oil consumption with 115,000 miles is the same as it was at 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles, sometimes I go 3 tannks of fuel and don't have to add, other times I go 100 miles and have to add a half quart

I generally never add more than a quart between oil changes (3500-4000 miles)

A quart is two pints or slightly more than an armful in blood doner terms
In beer terms its more than you should drink before trying to ride the bike.

Clearly, I'm not trying hard enough. My SV has done ~ 19K but I've never had to top the oil up between changes.

I've done 55000 miles and never had to add any oil. If It did use oil the engine would be worn out. I don't expect any oil usage before 100000 miles.
