GPS systems
 

hi does anyone use GPS systems on there bike, i'm begining to realise I have no sense of direction at all and its high time for the technolgy to take over

i am thinking of investing in one but i not sure what to go for, i am looking for features that allow me to:

input a destination and take the quickest route there
plan an exact route e.g. along say a lot of twisty roads :)
fix a route if i take a wrong turning

are they waterproof?

I use a Ipaq running tomtom3, with a bluetooth GPS in my pocket. Its fitted with velcro to the nose fairing, perfectly visible and the batteries last at least 5 hours so I've never felt the need to wire it into the electrics. ( I did have the previous GPS velcro'd on as well but it shot off on the A30 somewhere !)
Its also got the speed trap database running, so if you pay it enough attention you will have ample warning.
I can also pipe the audio output into a VOX walkie talkie, which then can be picked up by myself or anybody else I'm riding with who has a receiver.
The who set up was designed with a trip to France in mind, but since I'm not finding the SV very comfortable for longer trips that idea has been shelved for now.
The whole setup cost just under £200.

I use my mobile phone, Orange SPV C500 with TomTom Mobile and a seperate GPS system but you can but it as a complete package with TomToms own bluetooth GPS system. you can also use a Nokia that uses the Symbian Series 60 OS.

I also use the PDA version with TomTom Navigator 5. Persoanlly I like the PDA version as it's easier to see on the bike. I put mine in a tank bag and position it so i can still see it and use headphones to hear the commands.

Navigator 5 comes with the traffic updates so if you use a smartphone pda (Like the I-mate PDA2k) you can get up to the minute traffic reports and re-route your journey before you get stuck in them. also has a weather feature which has been pretty much bang on so far.

If you're not bothered about doing the live updates on a PDA version you can get the equipment quite cheap. There is a PDA out there that the Sat Nav receiver is built in. quite a nice device and does the job really well. Or you can get yourself a cheap PDA (Something like a Dell Axim would do the job) and buy a Compact Flash GPS device to sit in the top. the Dell would cost about 150 max and the GPS devices are about 50...thats a compact flash version or the bluetooth device. Better still, buy a PDA that has bluetooth and you can put the bluetooth GPS device in the tail section out the way. It'll not work too well if you use a pillion but other times it's cracking!

Both versions you can input a route to avoid motorways, take the quickest route, avoid toll roads etc. nav 5 you can now add multiple destinations to your planner, something missing from the older mobile version. There is a new mobile 5 but I've not got that one yet.

They are not waterproof but you can get waterproof cases. Like I said I stick mine in the tank bag and it does the job just dandy. One of the lads from MIGTS had a ball mount which fitted nicely onto the handlebars but I don't know where or how much it cost him.
