Legal Number Plates
 

I have read a few threads on this site and also the DVLA but was wondering what is the smallest number plate I could get away with eg PC Plod driving behind me and accepts my plate as passable.

A few of my mates have one liners which are clearly illegal yet have never been pulled but I would rather not be riding thinking I could get pulled at any moment.

Is the stock plate the smallest legal plate?

mine is twice the size of a standard photo roughly, and has passed mot from two bike shops so thats my excuss officer :lol:

Another thing to remember is not to have the one line plate. The police that I know said they always pull these people over. I have a small two line plate and I've been out on rides with police officers and there is no problem. But we all know there are people out there that want to give you a ticket and will :evil: If you give them less reasons to pull you over all should be fine :lol:

police round ere dont pull ya cos of ya plate unless u askin for ie speedin etc then they do ya for it and anythink else

bikes cars with black plates small ones etc not really a prob unless they tryin to get a msg round ie when im out with mates in the car they find anythink to do ya over.

i seen stupidoines one on a ducati look like it was made from lego??

just rember if u do get don for it again and again police can remove ur pate and give you a Q plate for ya car or bike lowerin the value etc

MOTORCYCLES AND TRICYCLES

All motorcycles and tricycles must display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.
Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1.9.2001 can display a number plate at the front of the vehicle but are not required to.
If you have a two or three wheeled motor cycle or tricycle that has a body type of a four-wheeled vehicle, you MUST display a number plate at the front and back of the vehicle.
The characters may be smaller e.g.

Character Height 64mm
Character Width 44mm
Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm
Space between groups 30mm
Top, side & bottom margin 11mm
Space between vertical lines 13mm

Motorcycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must display a two-line number plate number plate. Motorcycles registered prior to the 1 September 2001 may display a three-line plate, but one-line plates are illegal, irrespective of the date of registration of the motorcycle.

THE LAW

You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
Offences may result in any or all of the following:

A fine of up to £1,000
The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test

So there is nothing about the actual size of the plate, that is dictated by the area used by your number plate letters

Mine is 7x5 and the letters are pretty small on it, which was a bit annoying when it arrived. I have a huge placard type for MOT purposes, which I'd probably fit for touring too.

I think the one liners are more likely to attract the attention of the law. But the ones that have fancy fonts and rather than standard are the ones that really attract attention.

Some police may not actually notice an illegal plate so long as they can read it easily. The ones with the italics and different font automatically attract attention.

I have a mini plate on mine (by order of Mrs Ape) and have over taken and been followed by the police with no problem.

The letters/numbers are smaller than they should be but are the correct font.

mines a 5X7 & i have no probs it's in normal font.

Okay this is about car plates but it surely has to be the same for bike plates, so it looks like we might be getting more attention from Plod regarding our plates than we'd like:
