Replacing the throttle cable
 

I went on the SW End of Season Rideout yesterday.

When we were going past Brighton, I released that my throttle wasn't working properly, it wouldn't shutdown the revs. By the time I had managed to catch up with the others and persuade them to stop, it seems that the cable has probably frayed, and was sticking. So took it steady on the way home, and got here safely.

Can anyone advise how difficult it is to replace the cable myself? Also, which page(s) of the manual shows how to do it, I can't find it in the download section.

I had my bike apart at the weekend and it would be easiest with the tank up and the airbox removed.

Put an R6 cable on :)

Check the adjusters at the handlebar end. Two adjusters, one to wind in the slack of the throttle the other to wind in the slack of the return throttle cable. If this doesn't work try oiling the cables. A Haines manual describes this very well.

Section 1.13 job number 7.



If this doesn't work you will probably need new cables. If you need to change one you may as well change the other. (my opinion only).

There is always the possibilty that the return throttle cable nipple has snapped. Quiet common. Check the throttle cable at the engine end. If it is still intact, dismantle the throttle and check inside.

The 'pull' cable is much the easier of the two at the carb end as regards replacement.

I currently run with no return cable, and there's no sticking or undue rev problems. The carb return spring is heavy enough if the cable is oiled. I'd check the adjuster first as Ape said, then oil them anyway.

You can use it as the throttle cable if that snaps. No return cable and a snapped throttle cable equals going no where fast. :wink:

Yeah, it's not permanent. I'm needing same naked cables to suit the now higher bars, but haven't got round to it yet. One cable fits...just.



Have you tried that theory, I don't reckon it would work? When the return cable exits the outer does it not just bend in a loop rather than rotate the cam? :?

Problem wasn't too serious. I stripped and lub'd both cables and the pivots on the carbs. Seems to be all free, and goes like a dream again. Thanks for the advice.
