Counter lean??
I posted a topic a while ago about counter steering with a poll. Well I have another one about going round corners.
Today I was following a chap on a fazer. At every corner he counter leaned to the direction the bike was leaning. We are not talking hanging of the seat type cornering, just rapid cornering with bum firmly attached to the centre of the seat. Now first thoughts would be that he was a novice rider and was maybe nervous. However the speeds that we were travelling dictated otherwise. His lines were good and he was very smooth. (A little slower than I wanted to go but that's beside the point). When I go into corners I tend to lean (maybe more than I need to. Jamie Whitham style you might say) into the corner. I am thinking that this particular topic is probably more directed to the naked bike rider as with dropped bars and the crouched over sitting position more or less dictates where your body is going to be. So the question (or poll) is, do you lean when riding into corners, do you sit upright, or do you, as this fazer rider was doing, counter lean? |
sorry but i am not sure i am following you,

Ape means that instead of leaning in the direction of the turn ( like racers ) this guy was leaning in the opposite direction.
Personaly, I lean a bit into the corner. bike turns a little easier, and its easier to feel for rear wheel grip when weighting the inside peg - which is nice in winter :) Well, that's what I find anyway  |
As there is not an "I don't care" option, I went with D.

you turn the handle bars in the oppisite way you are going around the corner (hence - counter steer)
never done it, i just like to scare car drivers as they see me on my naked k4 come flying round that corner :riding: |
In this weather, I am leaning into the corner and not moving my butt around on the seat.
In the summer I am much much more inclined to hang a bum check off the seat  The very idea of leaning away from the corner sounds a bit scary and also to me it would feel wrong. What would the benefits of any of doing that be ? if any |

i followed a guy doing this on a Buell. Didn't half look odd. Easy way to lose the chicken strips though.

My lean depends entirely on how confident I'm feeling going into the corner.
'COOOOOOM ON!!! confident' - wiggle over on the seat a bit and lean into the corner to attempt higher speeds (one day I plan to 'hang' off the bike race style). 'just riding confident' - just lean with the bike, doesn't go over very far as I'm not pushing it. 'crap ride lacking confidence' - I'm tensed up, not leaning with the bike so probably look like I'm 'counter leaning'. Couldn't pick an option in the poll because of this. |
if i understand the question correctly then my answer is the same as Pings.
but Ape have you ever been behind me to see me corner? I'd be interested to know what it looks like i'm doing if you have. Maybe out of soho one night on way to the bridge or something? Ive always wanted someone to ride or drive nehind me and film me cornering some of the corners i do everyday, just so i can see how much i atcualy lean compared to how much i think i lean. Or maybe one of those level gague thingymijigs from a plane on my handlebars would be nice :D |
