Cutting Exhaust
I need to cut my exhaust pipe on a K5 SV650s. What do people suggest. Angle grinder or by-hand with a hacksaw.
And should I remove the entire exhaust, or do it on the bike? |
i done mine with the grinder it ****es through it. and finished it off with a hacksaw blade. make sure u get a hacksaw blade for cutting stainless steel or u will be there all day trying to cut it. just leave it on the bike but put a big sheet off cardboard behind the exhaust so the sparks dont hit the paint work!!!

Re: exhaust cutting
Hi i used a Dremmel with the cutting disc attatched, again flew through the pipe, and neat and tidy too.Get some goggles on for the sparks!!!
All the best Mark. |
Used a hacksaw for mine with a fairly old blade - few mopped brows later and it was done! Make sure you put something over the swingarm though as it gets awful close on the last bit...
|
Hacksaw if fine if you're worried by the "power tool ruins swingarm" stories! Takes a bit of elbow grease but perfectly possible and not too much work.
|
So before you go hacking away on the exhaust pipe. Do you put the bike on a rear stand or just leave it on the side stand and lay across the seat for this procedure?
Cheers! |
I left mine on the side stand so it was leaning over & i laid on the ground, i used the dremmel approach, make sure you go carefull & cover what you can.
|
I left the bike on the side stand put some masking tape on the exhaust marked the cut line on the masking tape and used a hacksaw to to cut the exhaust.

Put mine on the paddock stand and used a Dremmel. Did not cover anything up though but nothing got damaged

I think if you're going to use a power tool, leave it on the bike. I used a hack saw, with a new blade, and it was much easier with the exhaust off. It took me about 15 mins to cut through the pipe. Spent about 35 - 40 mins total. It could be harder if your exhaust brackets are rusted.
