Clutch adjustment is the obvious thing to check first, also many people have stated that their SV is sensitive to oil level.

There's no separate gear oil as it uses the engine oil (as do all modern bike engines), and yes I've found that oil level can have quite a marked effect on the gearchange as Sid Squid mentioned - too high a level can often make my gearbox a pig to use, particularly when selecting neutral/first gear; half way betwixt high and low is ideal I've found.

Clutch adjustment is another big issue (particularly at the front sprocket cover), so I'd have a play with both ideas and see how you get on.
