what is the width of the SV650 curvy chain?
 

so...... the ongoing saga of me changing my chain and sprockets has led to this question.
i am worried the bike shop have supplied the incorrect chain for my SV.
i have measured the chain link bars to be about 22mm.

is there a standard measurement for chains? if so, can i check this is the correct chain?


i only think this because i lost the split links and rivet links, therefore went back to the shop for replacements... they reckoned all SSS chains were the same and gave me some replacements.... which i now find are too narrow... so im short of a rivet link too.

any help appreciated!

It's a 525 chain, i.e. 25mm, but stick with 525 and you shouldn't be able to go wrong.

motorbike chain designation is a rather odd system.

It's a 3 digit number.

The first digit is the number of 1/8" in the pitch (i.e. distance between the pins along the chain), so a 4** chain is 1/2" pitch, a 5** is 5/8" and a 6** is 3/4" pitch.

The second and third digits are the number of 1/8" in the width (in effect the thickness of the sprockets) in a decimal format without the decimal point, so a *20 is 2.0 times 1/8" = 1/4", a *25 is 2.5 times 1/8" = 5/16", and a *30 is 3.0 times = 3/8".

Thus a 525 is 5/8" pitch and 5/16" width.

The overall width of the chain itself will depend on how thick the various sideplates and linkplates are, which can be different for normal and heavy duty etc.

Use the chain and sprocket types as recommended, the standard ones for the SV650 are 525.

For racing some folks use a 520, it's plenty strong enough and it's a bit lighter. Downside is that it's likely to wear faster but that's not an issue with racing.

For road use stick to the recommended size.

You do need to use the correct link for the actual chain you have, not all 525 links will necessarily fit correctly because the side plates may be thicker so the pins may be longer.
