Despatch Riding

I have spent a few months in London and always interested in what the DR's are riding...

They are the real heroes of 2 wheels....IMHO.

But, alas, i've only seen one SV650 used in this way. Plenty of Hondas though.

Are they not popular or am I just not looking in the right places?

The SV isn't the best bike for dispatching.

My hat goes off to dispatch riders. Although I think you have to be slightly mental and have no fear for your own safety to do it. Some guy here has a top box on his SV. I always snigger as I ride past.... :D

I wouldnt ride the SV as a Dispatch Rider, think I'd pick an ER5, GS500, CB500... something pretty gutless but enough power to get out of trouble and good for filtering.

Seen plenty of Hornets though. And CB500's...CG125's

Not much others...

A tale to be told in there somewhere...

Most mornings I see a few CBF500 and or 600s, the odd Hornet, a couple of old skool Kwak GT550 (probably), loads of CB500s, the occasional GS500, lots and lots of CG125s and scooters and a bloke on a Monkey bike. Plus a few things that might, once, have been recognisable motorcycles, but that was probably about a million miles and many many crashes ago.

And yes, they're all usually overtaking me. Hats off to them.

I think the SV naked would be a fine bike for dispatching, it isn't particularly economical though.
I think the reason relatively few of them make their way on circuit is simply one of cost, an SV would give no advantage useage wise over the obvious competition, GS5/CB5/Divvy etc etc, but would likely cost more to buy and run. Add to that the advantage of having a machine which is 'established' in the trade, such that there are easily reached dealers having consumables of the cost effective brands, the SV loses out ever so slightly there too.

This was one of the reasons for my choosing "The Mighty Gee-Tee" for my time of dispatching, (7 or so years), they were, and to an extent still are, everywhere, this meant that parts and consumables were readily available, and also that breakers would be brimming with scavengable wrecks.
