Anyone tried magnetic water conditioners
Anyone got any comments about whether these devices actually work?

We had one fitted when the central heating went in 5 years ago so wouldnt know ho bad it would be without one. They cant do any harm, and i think our boilers' warranty would be void without it.

Does it cut down on the chalk build-up in the kettle?
|
I fitted one but it did not work at all. My plumber reckons the proper conditioners cost £500

As for furring up the kettle, no, as i fill with cold water direct from the main. I dont have to clean the shower head that often, if that helps? |
our is fitted just above the stop tap so everything in the house should be limescale free, kettle still furs tho so i de-fur with white vinagar every now and again.

I think its rubbish.
I could be wrong, but the only force that could be put on these Calcium (hard water causing) ions is paramagnetic. (The ferromagnetic force is out, since... we dont have Iron in the right state (ie metal).) And, I believe that the paramagnet force can only act on Ca when Ca is a metal. (Ie Ca 20) It is never in this state in tap water (by definition), therefore the magnets can have no effect. As I said, I could be wrong. |
Got a magnetic inline doobry on my water inlet so everything gets the benefit. Or not.
In use, I have to rebuild the shower cartidge every month and the kettle is solid. There are scale reducers out there that require funny lumps to be put in the main water system that last about a year at a cost of arounr 30 quid or so. Recon I'll go for one of those soon to give the combi boiler a rest. Still costs a few hundred to install. A full water softener is the best solution but still requires salt but savings on soap and shower stuff helps, can be expensive to install and takes up a fair bit of space. Living in Wiltshire I'm used to very hard water. |
£60 for a magnet and a couple of tie wraps?
I've got some magnets at work that are so powerful they'll pull your watch off your wrist, from the magnetrons in the radar cabins. Maybe I'll give it a try. |
