Gracias a dios-ETA ceasefire!
 

It may not mean much to many folks on here,but today ETA have announced a"permanent" ceasefire as their grievances begin to finally be dealt with via political means.

ETA came to life following the shocking treatment received by many people in the Basque region by the forces of Franco,(whichs included the employment of bombers to destroy towns and villages containing civilians during that perverse struggle) ETA have continued to create their own kind of havoc up to very recently. They have been responsible for many despicable and callous acts which did no more than steel the goverments resolve and to turn other Spaniards away from offering sympathy to their reasoning.

The ultimate aim is that just like Cataluña the proud Basque people will have a high degree of autonomy in the future.

I did catch this news myself, but nice to see things being dealt with, I assume it will be slow and a long time before we hear anything good.

Great news... Think Peter Henry's right, they've brought the issue to the international stage but recently what they've mainly done is turn people against them.

That should see property prices rising around Bilbao.Emigration anyone? :lol:
It's a lovely area and well worth a visit,and not a terrorist in sight when I was there. :shock:

B.B.....Oddly enough,Bilbao already is one of the most expensive places to buy a property here in Spain! Strange when you think of the political backdrop to the place and the fact that the climate is very northern British Isles. :?

Very good that the pointless killing has stopped.

The scary part is the gap between the initial reason for the paramilitary group, and the dispanding of this group.
Govt goes in and behaves disgracefully.
Locals get enraged, and feel powerless.
Locals form paramilitary group.
Paramilitary group aquires momentum, and life of its own.
Govt gets completely enraged and will not talk to group in any shape or form.
Paramilitary group commits increasingly senseless violence, and becomes increasingly extreme in their aims.
Paramilitary group finally realises what its doing is pointless, and things can be sorted out in another way.
Govt starts talks with group, things calm down.
Paras give up weapons.

In the mean time loads of people died.

Very sad altogether. I cant help thinking, that a lot of suffering can be prevented if the govt goes in, right away, and tries very hard at least look like they are trying to deal with the problem that caused the Paras in the first place.
Most of what they need to do is a lot of good PR.
The govt are meant to be the big boys in the equation. Sooner or later an issue will have to be addressed. Why have loads of people killed in the mean time.

Alot of similarities between ETA and the IRA. Looks like the Spanish government has given in to Marxist terrorists just like the Britsh government.

People are not killing each other as much up north.
This is a good thing in my book.

If the options are being:
(Irish or English)
or
(dead)
I will take the (Irish or English) option. And work things from there :D
