Best Oil for 3000 mile trip?

I'm off on a biking holiday in May so am in the throws of getting the sv (curvy) up together. We will be riding from here to Slovenia and back in 10 days. I'm told that this is about 3000 miles. Whilst we won't be covering huge distances every day we will ride a few hundred miles a day.

I want to change the oil and filter before leaving and again when we get back to make sure I don't have any problems. What I want to know is what is the best oil to use? Do I go to H&G and buy their oil and filter for want seems to be a good price or do I spend a bit more and get a branded oil and filter...if so which one?

the HG oil is MOTUL rrp £24.99, tis a good oil for the money.

I'd buy some decent stuff and a nice filter, though no need to go silly, you might also want to take maybe a litre with you to allow for burn off and stuff. After all you don't want to be caught short on your engines life blood.

What would you consider a decent brand of oil and filter? Any suggestions about the best places to get them from?

Indeed, I’ve been using this semi-synth MOTUL 5100 from HG for years. In a variety of different bikes (including a highly tuned racebike) and I have never had an oil related problem. Its good oil.

For a 3000 mile round trip you are still well within a service limit, so you don’t need any ‘special’ oil.

A HG oil and filter deal * 2, used as you describe is money well spent in my opinion!! :)

I think the last lot I used was Bell Ray... though the next lot will be shell I think... which we also put in the Duke.

Castrol GPS and a Suzuki filter is my tipple, but I'm sure the other recommendations are just fine.

Don't overfill, it'll just use it more. I would expect to do 3k miles without needing to top up, but remember you can indeed buy oil outside the UK ( ). I wouldn't bother carrying any, at worst you buy a litre, top it up and dump some in the bin.

Do you have a Scottoiler fitted? Best touring kit you could add.

No Scottoiler fitted I'm afraid. I have often looked at them but they always look quite complicated to fit. Are they really that good? I have just had a new chain and sprockets fitted. The bike runs like it was new. I couldn't believe the difference!! I guess if i was going to fit a Scottoiler now would be the time?!

Just so a service before you go and a general all round check for the bike, brakes etc.... Take 1L of oil in a drink bottle just incase. I know that my bike seemed to drink oil when i went on holiday last august. If you can get a scottoiler as you dont realy want to get faffed oilling the chain every few hundred miles while on holiday. If when you go and if its hot the oil in the scottoiler may flow faster so you will have to turn it down.
