Lap top / tank bags
 

Does anyone have any experiance of carrying a laptop in a tank bag?

Are the magnets likely to be strong enough to damage the data on the hard disk?
(I wish I had thought of this BEFORE I bought the bag!!!!!!!!!)

On my oxford first time luggage tank bag, no, the magnets are only in the fold down flaps, and they would be too far away to cause damage.

However, your main worry should be vibration as that will kill the hard disk. You need to look into padding.

I have a back pack especially made for a laptop section when I took my laptop to Uni. Sure, if I came off, crack goes laptop and probably a bone in my back ( :lol: ) but it didn't get any biration. :)

Tank bags are sell on able with no real loss. Broken laptops aren't (really).

I've got the Oxford laptop backpack which is very well padded. I don't actually carry it on my back (considering my last accident, thats a very good thing), I just bungee it to the back of the bike. When I chucked the bike down the road, the laptop didn't move, it didn't even touch the ground and when I plugged it in, it was absolutely fine.

You could just get some foam and pad out your tank bag, pluss it would put some distance between the laptop and the magnets... Just incase. If your really worried then get a baglux cover and tank bag. No magnets at all, and I think they do a laptop version.

IIRC correctly you can also buy special rucksacks for carrying a laptop around in.

Personally I wouldnt put my laptop in a tank bag. I'd be worried about vibration killing the hard disk. Also my laptop is to big to fit in my tank bag. 17" widescreen 8)

I've got a biking rucksac. I put the laptop in it flat against my back and the "pokey" stuff like the cables, power cable, etc. on the far side, away from my back. As well as the padding of the rucksac, I also always wear a spine protector when carrying it.

I dont fancy the idea of a rucksack for someting as hard as a laptop, even with a back protector.

The Baglux kit looks like the way to go for me.
