brake pad change - top up fluid?

jus changed front pads and notice that after squeezing the lever a few times to run the fluid through the system, the fluid level isnt even in the container...... is it pretty normal to have to top up fluid after a front pad change???

what fluid should i get to top up???

cheers

Was the fluid visible between the markers before you changed the pad?
Now that you're squeezing the lever, is the caliper back on and squeezing against pads both sides and the disc in the middle?
If there was enough fluid before the pad change and there's not enough now, then that sounds like a problem. It would normally appear that the level goes up when you put fresh pads on, since the piston won't be extended so far out of the body.

Top the fluid up and blead you brakes! then check for leaks! If everything is ok take it for a steady ride to test but be careful!!!!!

before i started my fluid level was good.
i changed the pads and pushed the pistons right back.... i unscrewed the brake fluid resevoir so the pistons moved...
the resevoir seemed to fill up.
i squeezed the lever a good few times to get some pressure in the line...... then the fluid dissappeared!!

i dont understand it myself..... im gonna go have a GOOD look!

cheers guy

Did you refit the caliper before you squeezed the lever? If not then it makes sense for the fluid to disappear, otherwise you may have a leak or just have spilt it.

im gonna top up and squeeze away.... see if i get any leaks.

any ideas what type of fluid i should get??
dot 5?

Bodily fluids work too  errr not.

Dot 4 isnt it for brakes?
As carsick said pretty much, but have a look around the bleed nipples themselves. I have discovered that around the thread, on one of my front bleed nipples, flid seeps out if its not done up super tight.

would also say to bleed the system cos if you have got to the point whre there is no fluid in the resevoir then you may well have sucked some air in there too.

ok cheers!

so.... how do i bleed the system? :?

If you dont know, then you shouldnt really be atempting it yourself. I would either find someone that knows what they are doing, or get it to someone who does. Brakes can save your life and its not worth attempting something that you are not sure of.

Do you have 'feel' in the lever, as in, is it hard, or does the lever come back to the bar?

branny 19-04-06 02:10 PM

well.... ive got to disagree.... because, if i am told how, then im sure im more than capable 8)
most fluid systems have a set routine to be bled, i just dont know the SV one!

it is a bit 'squidgee' yeah.... gonna have a look tonight, seen as its a nice day.
