DAS to R1
 
Yes I have met an R1 rider who only did her DAS 2 weeks ago. Yes I did say her, it is a she, she really wants of all things a CBR600F, but until she finds the right one, she is riding a loaned R1.

Her kit consists of boots, a second hand helmet and gloves. She has promised me that she is going to buy some leathers at the weekend when she is off work.

But I ask you, it must of been cheaper for her to have bought a bike than to pay the insurance for the R1.

Nuts, I never thought there should be a restriction on what bike you can get on after pasing your test, but this is plain daft.

Well it does sound like she wants a more 'sensible' bike - so perhaps the fault is not entirely hers, but some blame must go to the person who lent her the R1.

Did you see here ride? She may actually be taking things steady and conservatively - it is possible on an R1 you know, just like any bike. Also, if I dare to stereotype, as a bird she is less likely to succumb to the red mist, and the need to 'see what the bike can do'.

She may have been off-roading on bikes for years and has only just felt the desire to be on the road. Who knows.

Sorry guys, I just hate to prejudge until I got evidence of their actual riding skills. To be honest, you're almost sounding like a couple of cagers there. :?

lol, I was half way through writing similar myself K, and I'm a bloke................I think.

She could have been riding for ages before hand and have more skill then plenty of people here.

A guy I work with has done the same thing - he has bought an ex-trackday R1 and put it back on the road - he took his DAS last week and was boasting that over the weekend he had over 180mph out of it :roll: Wonder how long it will be before he hurts himself and/or someone else...

I met a girl at Chelsea Bridge once with a TLR, we got chatting and it turned out she passed her test a week ago, never having ridden before :shock:

I later learned she had several accidents in the first few months, including one where she was filtering, did something bizarre with the clutch and brought the front wheel up so fast the bike flipped up in the air and crashed back down on top of her.

That (and indeed the R1,) for a first bike is just damn stupid :roll:

As with a car drivers license, once a full bike license is obtained, it is a legal entitlement to be able to drive everything available in that class of vehicle, be it renault clio or mclaren F1, CB500 or Y2K turbine.

This is how our legal system works. It has its flaws and it has its benefits.

It is possible to argue that the restricted licence (a1, a2, DAS) scheme applied to bikes, is discriminatory compared to the one-shot of car drivers.

Beyond this, if a person deems themselves to be responsible enough to own and run such a powerful vehicle, so be it.

To consider restricting this freedom, plays into Orwellian, nanny-state arguments.

My personal opinion? Its your life, and ultimately your fate. Do with it what you will.
