T-Mobile MDA Vario/O2 XDA Mini S
The same phone different networks, anyone got one of these that can give me there impressions.
This website gives it a rather favorable review, but then its not a real world review and I don't know if he's been paid off or atleast lead. Its just that I was thinking of taking this deal from dialaphone, or calling o2 (current subscriber) and seeing what they offer. The big swingers are the Wifi and CoPilot, though it will be over 18 months. |
Hi mate,
I have a view of the O2's arround the office, I use the XDA Exec, but doing some minor support for the Mini S. THere not bad, but I do recommend you go for the latest ROM update. The battery life is not bad, and have found it combatable with most things, where running open hand on them, so that we can check our main on the Exchange 2003 server. I use this forum alot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ Go to the "Wizard" as that's the relavent one to the mini S. It will give you a chance to look at others views and problems. Hope that helps, if you want more help, feel free to PM me. Rich |
I've got a XDA Mini S.
Very impressed with it so far, had a XDA IIs before this and it's handled everything I've thrown at it. Anything specific you want to know? Oh, I should also mention the price I got it for... Rang 02 and they wanted £79.99 to upgrade to the Mini S. I told them I'd seen it online somewhere for free and if they couldn't do it for free I'd cancel my contract. I still ended up paying £79.99 for the handset.... BUT, they credited my account with 3 month's line rental - a total of £105!! (The way I look at it, they paid me £25 to take it off them  ) Always haggle and have a website ready to quote to them, where you've seen the free deal or whatever, I found it for free on www.buymobilephones.net - I didn't actually want to deal with the website as they were an unknown quantity to me, but the threat of me taking my business elsewhere was enough for 02 to take me seriously... |
That XDA Developers site is full of info.
The Mini and all that are like it are not that fast. Well they are and not. I have the Xda2 & 2i, both in my opinion are faster than the Mini S. I know why though, the Xda 2 & 2i have a flaw, if the battery runs out you are stuffed and everything is lost while on the Mini S it is not, this is due to a diffrent memory they use which is slower than what is installed on the Xda 2 & 2i. I have had my Xda 2 for the last 2 years without any major problems, i have the Xda 2i at home since the start of the year just i dont have a good reason to swap over to it yet. Other than whats above they are good. |
I did try to call O2 today about it, but after 10 minutes on hold to find out when my contact expires, and then 10 minute on hold to talk to someone. I had give up and get back to work.

OK.. offered me the XDA at 80 quid, but 200 mins and 500 texts for £15 a month. They are just out of stock at the moment.
So T-Mobile offer is (working on 12 months) £35 month and £50 for the phone = £470 (with CoPilot) o2 £15 month and £80 for the phone, buy CoPilot £120 = £380 :D I'll be ordering on the 24 then... |
Grinch,
just something to bear in mind, we have played with alot of ROM packs, and we did not rate the T-mobile ones that much, there not bad, but compared to the O2 ROM its much better. THe I mate Rom, is excellent and its the one I run on my phone, but the best ROM out there for the XDA Exec seems to be the QTek Rom, but its a bit of a pain. T- Mobile don't do the most frequent updates with there ROM packs. At the end of the day, I am a geek and I love to play arround with technology, but you might not be to bothered. Just thought you might like to know. Rich |
I do tend to play rather alot, though it depends on my time. I'm also interested in the wireless access of home, saves me having to get a laptop. :D After all if its just for posting on here, blogging, and the odd e-mail I think it should cope.
Other things I would be interested in WiFi scanning (which it does) but something along the lines of NetStumbler. Telnet, possibly a program like putty. Photo Managment, something like Picasa 2. Is there a Mozzila client. And MP3 editing like, dB Power AMP or Mp3splitter. Any ideas would be a great help, though I'll be having a hunt about. |
